Bangkok Christian International School fosters a family atmosphere of respect, concern for others, open-mindedness, self esteem, and self discipline. BCIS-High School Department, in particular, is committed to a challenging curriculum that ushers students to highly competitive universities worldwide and equips them for life in the 21st century.

 

We expect our students to demonstrate dynamic involvement in any learning experience, seeking excellence for God’s glory.  They are trained to deal with everyday problems, make decisions, and find solutions to life’s challenges in the light of an enhanced curriculum enriched with Biblical truths and Christian values.

 

We offer accelerated programs for students who excel in particular subject areas. Most students will be mainstreamed, and remedial programs are afforded for those who have difficulties in coping with various aspects of learning.

BCIS-High School offers a full range of courses, preparing students for university and tertiary education and training.

 

THE DEPARTMENTS AND COURSES OFFERED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION:

 

ENGLISH

 

At BCIS, English is the medium of instruction in all classes (except foreign language classes). As many students will be heading to an English -medium university, a solid foundation in English is critical.  The English Department at BCIS is dedicated to providing students with experience in reading challenging literature of the literary canon, writing convincing and insightful papers, and in fostering ability and confidence to make oral presentations and lead discussion groups. The skills that are developed in the English classes can be transferred to all other subject areas, as well as areas in the real world.

 

As a Christian institution, BCIS challenges students to develop a defense, both general and Christian, of literature and to relate the literature they read to their understanding of the Bible and to their own aesthetic and moral development as Christians.

Social Sciences

 

THE BCIS Social Sciences Department is committed to educational excellence and strives to provide academically challenging and relevant courses that will develop the critical and reflective capacities of our students.

 

Social Science courses are aimed at helping students to become socially responsible global citizens with the analytical skills and self discipline essential for facing the challenges of the future.  The courses emphasize values of human dignity and promote the tolerance and understanding of each individual’s cultural, national, and religious identity.

Geography

 

Grades 7 and 8

 

In order to bring about a greater understanding of the international scene, in junior High School, the students investigate the five inhabited continents of the world, learning about the cultural, social, economic and artistic contribution that each country makes to the rich and diverse pattern of the world.

Students will study global connections and recognize and comprehend the human-environment interaction and its effects.

 

Alongside the human aspect of the nations, the students study the natural features of each particular country, its capital, important places of interest, local customs and traditions and the political and economic situation.

 

World History

 

Grade 9

 

In order to develop a well-rounded understanding of ancient World History, 9th grade classes will study the rise and development of early civilizations such as Ancient Greece, Rome, India and China.

 

Next, we will take a look at the advancement of civilizations across several regions including: The Byzantines, Islam, Medieval Europe, East and South Asia, and the Americas. Students will learn to appreciate that the main ideas of the Enlightenment can be traced back to such movements as the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution and to the Greeks, Romans, and Christianity.

 

As a result, the students in 9th grade World History will gain awareness of the past, while applying that knowledge in the present.

 

Grade 10

 

Students in Grade 10 study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late eighteenth century through to the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. They trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations.

 

Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives.

 

Grade 11

 

In Grade 11, students will study, in more depth, modern world history, including the causes, events and subsequent effects of the two World Wars in the 20th Century.

 

They will analyze the consequences of World War 1 with the rise of totalitarian regimes.  Studying the effects of the Second World War, students will discuss the human costs of the war, with particular attention to the Holocaust that resulted in the murder of six million Jewish civilians and the civilian and military losses in Russia, Germany, Britain, the United States, China, and Japan.

There will be in-depth study of selected areas of the contemporary world.

The phenomenon of genocide throughout the history of the world will be examined.

 

Political Science

 

Grade 12

 

The aim of this course is to enable our students to become more informed citizens, so that they can effectively develop their own political opinions and to sharpen critical-thinking skills by applying logic and coherent argument.

 

The students study comparative politics. An emphasis is placed on critically analyzing the differences between selected national governments of the world, with particular attention paid to the structure of their legal, executive and judicial systems and how these have evolved throughout history.

 

Students are encouraged to investigate and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of   Democratic and authoritarian regimes, including Communism, against a background of human rights.

 

In addition to studying governments and ideologies, students will master fundamental communication techniques, critical thinking as it applies to debate, and speech skills such as style and persuasion, both with a focus on political science topics. Students will also be able to participate in a lively simulated election.

 

MATHEMATICS

 

Mathematics provides an important key to understanding the world in which we live. Mathematics can enter our lives through numerous ways. For most people mathematics is also used in their chosen professions: artists, musicians, economists, engineers, and scientists among others.

 

Mathematical methods, theories and application are evident to almost every area of science, engineering, industry, education, military and business.  People use their training in rigorous thinking and mathematical analysis to solve problems in every facet of life and work.

 

Many of the contributions and uses of mathematics are closely related to the need for mathematical modeling and simulation of physical phenomena on the computer. In addition, the analysis and control of processes, and optimization and scheduling of resources use significant mathematics.

SCIENCES

 

The HS Science program can not tell students everything about the world, but it offers an important and exciting knowledge about the material world we all live in. An understanding of scientific ideas can also help in personal decision-making, and allow students to express views on, and become involved in issues which are of public interest.

 

The department is implementing an outcome-based curriculum, together with a program of laboratory based activities. Our goal is to establish an authentic assessment of the required outcomes, with the student aware of the wide variety of assessment techniques used. Technology is an important part of the curriculum with internet access, being used for information searches and real-time data collection.

ICT

 

This curriculum aims at learners’ holistic development enabling them to acquire knowledge, capacity and essential skills required for various work settings. Learners will thus efficiently see the prospects of their future careers and further education. 

The ICT course will cover processes of information technologies: communication, the search for data, application of data and information, problem-solving, creation of work, values and effects of ICT.

 

ICT are introductory courses for students in hardware and software. Students will learn about fundamental concepts and key applications skills for using Microsoft Windows, web browsers, word processor, presentation software, spreadsheet, graphics applications and computer networking, as well as related social and ethical issues. Students will learn how to become an effective researcher using online resources that will help them develop independent thinking, cultural understanding, and life-long learning skills.

The Arts

 

The Art department provides opportunities for students to learn a range of subjects within the Visual, Industrial and Performing Arts.  In Visual Art the aim is give students a range of experiences which will develop an understanding of the role the Arts play within society.  The aim is also to build strong practical skills and for students to produce high quality art work. Teaching focuses on three areas: History of Art; visual awareness and practical art projects.  Subjects covered are Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics and Photography.

 

Industrial Arts gives students the opportunity to undertake design based projects. Students will visualize, design and construct individual projects using wood, metal, plastic and glass. They will receive training in using an array of hand and power tools.

In Performing Arts, students will have the opportunity to act, sing and play musical instruments. These different skills will be brought together in various productions which the students will write and perform themselves.

 

Public Speaking Class

 

Can you picture yourself in front of several hundred people giving an extraordinary speech to persuade?!? Most very successful adults have the ability to give winning oral presentations. At BCIS students are preparing for the time in life when they will need to have confidence, and aptitude in delivering important speeches. Initially, they choose a topic and purpose that will match the level of their audience. Further, the students develop an introduction that ‘grabs the attention’ of whom they are speaking.  Then the body [main part of their speech] of their presentation will be embellished with main ideas supported with many details. It needs to be well organized and focused on the purpose of their speech. Finally, they learn to bring it to conclusion tying everything together. Voilà, what a great speech! Our students learn various types of speeches: speeches to inform, to persuade, to demonstrate, and to entertain, etc. They take immense satisfaction in developing these skills that are being used today, as well as in the future.

 

Home Economics

 

Aims and learning outcomes:

Home economics should encourage students to be inspired, moved and changed by following a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study.

 

They should prepare students to make informed decisions about further learning

opportunities.

 

Through study and with particular emphasis on practical work, Home Economics must enable students to:

 

• actively engage in the processes of home economics to develop as effective and

independent learners and to learn basic skills.

 

• develop their knowledge and understanding of human needs within a diverse society.

 

• develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant technological and scientific

developments.

 

• develop a critical and analytical approach to decision making and problem-solving in

relation to the specified context.

 

• examine issues that affect the quality of human life, including an appreciation of

RELIGION

 

At BCIS, the Christian Education courses are designed to engage students in the active and experiential formulation and examination of their beliefs and values. All students will be guided through basic Bible study, structure and history. Respectful of the uniqueness and diversity of the individual, our goal is to enable each student to grow their ability to discern spiritual truth for themselves. This is facilitated by course content through lectures, discussions, projects, debates, guest speakers, weekly Chapels, and community service. Through these numerous activities, students are able to investigate and then integrate moral ideals, empowering them to make choices and decision that are conscious and deliberate in the light of their personal moral codes and beliefs. We believe that students who gain spiritual maturity will also in turn become better leaders in the community and beyond, so BCIS seniors are trained in Leadership and Outreach courses.

Physical Education

 

In the secondary level, there is a range of sports and games that provide opportunities for students to develop their skills, appreciate games and improve their game performances. At all levels, wide variety of physical activities are provided so that the students are exposed to many different challenges and are able to make choices and enjoy these activities later in life.

 

We offer the following options:

 

Games/Sports, Health and Fitness, Swimming

 

Games can be those in which two teams compete within an area that have defensive and offensive teams that invades an opponents area to score a point. Examples of games are:

 

Basketball, Soccer/Football, and Ultimate Frisbee,

 

We also offer net games in which two players compete within an area separated by a net set in certain height games such as Badminton, Table Tennis, and Volleyball.

We also offer swimming classes. Swimming in secondary level is focused on learning to swim well and at least swim one recognized stroke and can demonstrate basic survival techniques, water safety and rescue techniques.

 

The recognized strokes are breaststroke, front/freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

 

Health and Fitness

 

Students participate regularly in games and apply F.I.T.T. principles to these activities to meet personal fitness and meet the health-related fitness standards as defined by a fitness test.

 

EFL (English as a Foreign Language)

 

The High School EFL Program offers intensive English instruction to Grade 8-9 students at the Beginner and Intermediate Levels of EFL.

 

The purpose of the EFL Program is to prepare students to successfully enter and complete mainstream classes. Students are given every opportunity to develop the language skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking required in the regular grades. Students are challenged to read extensively in English and to use study skills and learning strategies which will enable them to cope with mainstream courses.

 

Placement decisions are made by a committee of ESL and mainstream teachers, administrators, and counseling staff each school year. Academic placement of an ESL student is evaluated by the committee based on: an assessment by an ESL teacher of the readiness of the student; a portfolio of the work done by the student throughout the school year; the motivation, study habits, and behavior of the student; a writing sample prepared under test conditions; and the results of a grade appropriate standardized reading test.

Chinese Courses

 

The Chinese curriculum aims at establishing a sound foundation of vocabulary and sufficient knowledge of Chinese in second language context. Learners will develop language competence and acquire necessary communication skills through natural and gradual integration of language, content and cultural elements.

The Chinese courses adopt a holistic approach and are designed to emphasize the development of communication skills in listening, speaking, reading writing.

Korean language 

 

This curriculum aims at learners’ holistic development enabling them to acquire knowledge and skills in understanding and evaluation of Korean literature. Learners will thus efficiently see prospects of their future careers and future education.

 

Korean language course will cover reading, understanding and evaluating of Korean literature such as poem, novel, essay, letter and story. The learners may develop their capacity and essential skills in critical reading, creative writing, and deep understanding of Korean history and society.

 

Korean language is a language art course for students. Students will learn about the characteristics of Korean literature through reading, discussing, evaluating and writing it. Students will present their opinions and understanding and also listen to others’ in class. Thus the learners may enlarge their cognitive abilities, affection for literature and creative thinking.

La Classe Française

 

“Bonjour!” in French to all who are reading this page. BCIS offers five international languages, of which French is one of them. Students in grades 7 - 12 may elect to take this semester class.  It is essentially a beginning conversation class; however, lately, I’ve been sharing some important grammar points that will give them a more comprehensive overview of the language. We also sing songs, as well as go on the Internet to experience the reality of live French. Students only have French two days a week, so they really need to practice the language in between the French Class days. I would encourage them to go on the Web site to experience the language from native French speakers.

 

They may take another semester next year, and be in French 2 A&B.

Thai Language and Culture Program for Non-Thai Students

 

The goal of the Thai Language and Culture Program for Non-Thai Speaking Student is to enable them to communicate in Thai appropriately to cultivate understanding of, and to have good attitude towards the Thai culture. Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately in Thai society and show appreciation of and respect for cultural diversity.

 

The Thai language course for Non-Thai speaking students is based on competence. The course is designed to help students to acquire a wide range of sufficient vocabulary and to develop practical language skills relevant to the student’s daily lives. The course is conducted from Level 1-4 including: Early Beginning and Beginning, Early Intermediate and Intermediate, Advanced, depending on the individual student’s language background and ability. The main emphasis of the program is on conversational Thai. As the students advance through the course, the greater emphasis is placed on Thai basic literacy and grammar
